Overview

Posovac Hounds are high-energy Croatian hunting dogs who have been around for hundreds of years. They are extremely loyal and loving toward their families and make excellent pets for anyone willing to help them fulfill their high exercise needs.

The Posavac Hound is an ancient breed of Croatian hunting dog. They are excellent at sniffing out small game and will hunt all day long if you let them. They are also loving family companions who will be sure to alert you to any strangers coming your way. Posavac Hounds have an exorbitant amount of energy, which you’ll need to help them burn off every day. A well-exercised Posovac Hound makes a loving and loyal family pet for both hunting and non-hunting families alike.

Characteristics

Lifestyle & Living Conditions

In general, Posovac Hounds are best suited to rural life, where they have plenty of safe space to play and won’t annoy neighbors with lots of barking. However, if properly exercised, they can adapt to smaller living spaces, but it takes an extreme commitment to keeping them active. They love children and other dogs, but you’ll want to keep an eye on them around any dogs or other pets that are smaller. The Posovac Hound has a very high prey drive and sometimes can’t help chasing those cute kitties!

Exercise & Activity

Yes to activity! The Posovac Hound may seem like they have virtually unlimited energy when it comes to staying active. They will hunt all day long if you let them and would love it if you did. If you don’t take them hunting, take them for a hike, jog, or even a bike ride. Just remember, the Posovac Hound is an excellent dog but only if they get plenty of daily exercise.

Temperament and Behavior

Posovac Hounds love their families and feel an innate need to protect them. They will bark at strangers and are generally more reserved around people they don’t know. When a Posovac Hound is not getting enough exercise, they can become high-strung and misbehave. You’ll know right away if your Posovac has too much energy stored up, as they will start acting mischievous and maybe even a little naughty.

Coat & Grooming

Posovac Hounds have a smooth, short coat that is extremely easy to care for. A weekly brushing will help them stay happy and healthy and will also cut back on the amount of hair you find in your furniture
