Overview

The Sporting Lucas Terrier is primarily a favorite family pet, having an easy going and loving nature, as well as being low maintenance and friendly with everyone they come across. They are playful, eager to please, and energetic without needing hours of activity. This little dog makes a fantastic friend for almost anyone.

The Sporting Lucas Terrier is a loving and popular small terrier breed that was originally bred as a tenacious sporting dog. Today, they are primarily kept as friendly-family pets and show dogs. They are terrier-like in appearance, with a black, white, or tan coat and shed little, so these little dogs are low maintenance. Since they are small, a Lucas Terrier will fit in a variety of living arrangements and make an easygoing and caring family pet.

Characteristics

Lifestyle & Living Conditions

The Sporting Terrier was originally bred to be a working terrier, but today, they are content to be a fun and loving family pet. Their sweet personalities fit with just about anyone, since they love adults, humans, and friends alike. Terriers are calm and happy just about anywhere, making them a great fit for life in the city, on the farm, or out in the suburbs.

Exercise & Activity

The Sporting Lucas Terrier is a good breed to consider if you live in an apartment or equally small home. They do need a daily walk, but other than that are content to remain pretty low-key indoors. They will do okay without a yard, but they still like a good romp in an enclosed area. Their low energy makes them great walking buddies.

Temperament and Behavior

The Sporting Lucas Terrier is a popular canine, especially in Britain and the U.S. They are smart and easy to train, and they love people. They are excellent with children and are relatively quiet by nature. They do require a firm, confident pack leader to avoid Small Dog Syndrome, but they will eagerly follow the person they view as the pack leader and can't wait to play with anyone who is willing. Lucas Terriers may alert you when someone new comes to the door, but they're also ready to make friends with anyone at anytime!

Coat & Grooming

Caring for a Sporting Lucas Terrier is easy. They shed little to no hair and have a low odor. They do have a double coat that needs hand stripping once a year, but otherwise, they do well with just a weekly brushing. Their coats are medium in length and usually come in either white or white and tan, with occasional darker grey or black markings through their coat.
